A Brief History of Turkish Association of Urology

The foundations of Turkish Urology were laid in 1909. However it gained its true identity after the year 1923, i.e. beginning from the foundation of Turkish Republic. The young Turkish Urology was founded in 1933 with the aim of congregation as a society and stating its presence. As it is well known urologic matters were considered a part of surgery branches for a long time. However some specific features of urology and its different surgical methods became rapidly accepted as a separate field. Two chairs were established, one at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and the other at Gülhane Military Medical Academy followed by the establishment of urology clinics at the Vakıf Gureba Hospital and at other state hospitals.

Urologists working heart and soul to spread the name “urology” desired to come together and to establish an association, to issue a regular publication and to announce the name of Turkish Urology to the entire world. With this aim and based on Article A of the Law on Associations numbered 3512, 14 urologists in Istanbul came together and founded Turkish Association of Urology on the 23rd of January 1933.
